Reliance Jio has launched a new JioFi hotspot
New JioFi comes at Rs. 999

Reliance Jio has expanded its JioFi family with the launch of a new JioFi 4G LTE hotspot device at a price of Rs. 999. The new model, dubbed JioFi JMR815, is exclusively available for purchase through Flipkart. It comes with a one-year warranty and is touted to deliver download speeds of up to 150Mbps and upload speeds of up to 50Mbps. Moreover, the device carries a "Designed in India" tag that could help the telco persuade new buyers.

Unlike the original JioFi that was an egg-shaped dongle, the new JioFi model has a circular build with physical buttons of power on/ off and WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup). There are also notification lights for battery, 4G, and Wi-Fi signal strength. The device allows 32 users to connect to a high-speed data network, including 31 on Wi-Fi and one on USB. Once connected, it offers HD voice and video calls via Jio 4G Voice app on smartphones. Besides, it is powered by an ALT3800 processor and supports FDD-Band 3, Band 5, and TDD-Band 40.

The new JioFi has a microSD card slot that supports storage expansion up to 64GB. The device also packs a 3000mAh battery that is rated to have a charging time of 3.5 hours. To compare, the original JioFi was debuted with a 2300mAh battery. The new model is not yet listed on Jio.com, and we've reached out to the company for a clarification on its plans with the 4G dongle.

The latest JioFi model comes days after Reliance Jio launched a new JioFi Rs. 1,999 offer under which it offers free data and voucher benefits worth Rs. 3,595. The company mainly brought the JioFi at Rs. 1,999 with bundled data worth Rs. 1,295 and voucher worth Rs. 2,300 from AJIO, Reliance Digital, and Paytm. Interestingly, customers were also provided with the same JioFi device at Rs. 999, without the free data and voucher benefits.

 Apple is giving some cosmetic upgrades to the Apple Watch, with a series of new bands across all types, introducing some flashy colour options. The new bands include updates to the regular Apple Watch bands, its Nike lineup, as well as the company's Hermes line. The bands will be available to order later in March from Apple's website, Apple Stores, and other stores and carriers, the company noted.

For the Apple Watch, the Woven Nylon bands now include an updated stripe pattern and come in Black, Blue, Gray, and Pink colour options. Meanwhile, there are new colour options in the Sport Band, Sport Loop, and Classic Buckle as well. The Sport Band will come in Denim Blue, Lemonade, and Red Raspberry colours, while the Sport Loop will be available in Flash Light, Hot Pink, Marine Green, and Tahoe Blue. Also, the Classic Buckle will arrive in Spring Yellow, Electric Blue, and Soft Pink colour options.

Apple has noted that the Nike Sport Loop will now be sold separately in colours options that match with Nike's running shoes. Additionally, new colours options are available for the Nike Sport Band, which the company already sells separately. Nike Sport Loop will be available in Black/ Pure Platinum, Bright Crimson/ Black, Cargo Khaki, Midnight Fog, and Pearl Pink. Also, the Nike Sport Band will come in Barely Rose/ Pearl Pink, Black/ White, and Cargo Khaki/ Black colour options.

When it comes to the Apple Watch Hermes, the Single Tour Rallye and Double Tour bands now display contrasting paint details. The 38mm Double Tour in Indigo with rouge H polished edge and rouge H contrasted loop and the 38mm Double Tour in Blanc with rouge H polished edge and rouge H contrasted loop. The same options are available for the 42mm Single Tour Rallye as well.

Notably, the Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) will now include new 38mm and 42mm Space Gray Aluminum Cases with Black Sport Loop models and the Apple Watch Nike+ (GPS + Cellular) will include new 38mm and 42mm Space Gray Aluminum Cases with Midnight Fog Nike Sport Loop models.

Facebook  hasn't had a good week, ever since the social media giant got caught up in the data privacy scandal linked with data analytics firm Cambridge Analytica (CA). Just to recap, CA allegedly procured personal user data on over 50 million Facebook users, and this data was used for social media targeting in political campaigns. Since the scandal came to light, users have been looking for ways to remove their data from the social media website prompting the #DeleteFacebook online campaign. Part of that process, would include downloading all your data from the social network, so that you can retain your information even after deleting your account. Several people have been doing so in the recent past, and, there were some interesting revelations to be found within the data - including which advertisers have access to your data, as well as complete call records in some cases.


A tweet thread by software developer Dylan McKay suggests an interesting revelation wherein Facebook has access to call history details of McKay's conversations with his partner's mother. Add to that, Facebook seems to have historical records of all contacts (even those deleted), metadata of text messages, and metadata of cellular call logs. Notably, he was using an Android phone during November 2016 and July 2017 when the data breach seems to have occurred.

To view the history of your Facebook account's data, log in to Facebook.com on the desktop browser, click on the drop down icon on the top right of the page and select Settings. In the General tab, you will see the Download a copy of your Facebook data option. Clicking that will prompt you to re-enter your Facebook password; now select Start My Archive to initiate the download request. An email containing a ZIP file will then be sent to your registered email address. File size can depend on the activity frequency and age of your Facebook profile. In our case, the size was a massive 4.29GB.


Talking about advertisers extracting data from your Facebook profile, the ZIP file was spotted to contain an HTML folder by The News Minute, which has a page titled Ads. Here, you can find the list of "Advertisers with your contact info" buried at the end of the HTML page. The page also contains an "Ad Topics" section which includes the list of keywords that are used by third-party advertisers to potentially target ads on your timeline. Another interesting section in the file is titled "Ads History" that lists every ad you have ever clicked on since your account's inception.

The ZIP file also contains the entire list of third-party apps that you have installed on or linked with your Facebook account. It has IP addresses you've logged in from, email addresses, contact numbers of all friends you have added and pages you have liked; even all your phonebook contacts from Android smartphones you have used to log in to the Facebook account. Apart from that, it contains metadata on Facebook events, your friend list, messages, places you have checked into, videos you have uploaded/ been tagged in, and also every like and poke you've made.

To remove this access, you might have to completely delete (not deactivate) your Facebook account. If that is not an option, you can limit access by changing your preferences and revoking access to third-party apps. The latter can be done by going into Account Settings > Apps > Logged in with Facebook and removing the apps you wish to revoke access from.

While the Jio Phone runs on KaiOS, which does not offer support for WhatsApp, the social media giant has reportedly been spotted working on a KaiOS version of the app, which will bring the support for Jio Phone users. The Jio Phone, Reliance Jio's 4G VoLTE-enabled feature phone, had been launched with some smart features in 2017, but users have been complaining about the lack of WhatsApp support on the handset. Now though, KaiOS may get support for the world's most popular messaging app, and thus bringing it to the Jio Phone.

KaiOS, based on Linux, is a light operating system and takes up fewer resources compared to full-fledged operating systems like Android and iOS. It is mostly seen on mobiles without a touchscreen. Jio Phone, one of the most popular feature phones in India, uses KaiOS. As per WABetaInfo, a tracker of upcoming WhatsApp features, "references to a native KaiOS app" have been spotted in the latest beta commits to WhatsApp for Windows Phone version 2.18.38.

It should be noted that there has been no official announcement from neither WhatsApp nor Reliance Jio regarding the announcement of the feature.

Notably, KaiOS Technologies had already mentioned last month that it has partnered with many technology giants, most notably Facebook, Twitter, and Google. To recall, Jio Phone already has a special edition of the Google Assistant.

Akin to an addictive drug, social media can easily ensnare you in its wraps. It will either make you feel very good about yourself or aggravate every insecurity and misgiving you have ever felt. Social media anxiety is a very real disorder in today's times with people more invested in the virtual world than reality.

With misinformation, propaganda, and fake news perpetuating left right and centre, social media is fast becoming a vile and toxic place where social interactions are being buried under a mountain of brain-numbing nonsense. Apart from the social network's own policies, there are no regulations or any system of checks and balances in place to control spread of malicious information.

You are the product - and everyone wants their message, product, or brand to reach you. Your data - that you have knowingly or unknowingly signed away to the social media platforms - is theirs to sell to third parties. At the end of the day, the social media of today has become a business platform - be it for overzealous groups trying to spread a message, business trying to push their product, content creators pushing highly well-packaged and appealing articles that do not really inform, or marketing agencies trying to make their product 'trend'.

'What's on your mind?' Sadly, no one really cares anymore. On Social media, that is. Put your smartphones down, shut down your computers and talk to your friends and family, and you'll likely find they actually do care.

Dystopian shows like Black Mirror show a future where social media takes over reality and starts dictating one's standing in the world. Seeing how the platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and WhatsApp are taking over the world - with people signing over their privacy and data blindly - we are not really far away from that reality. It's time to sign out.

This means the Facebook-owned photo-sharing application will begin to surface newer posts at the top of the feed. Additionally, the user feed will no longer refresh and go to the top automatically.

In 2018 Instagram had introduced a change in its algorithm where instead of showing users the most recent posts first, the mobile photo-sharing app decided to give higher priority to posts that each user is likely to care about most. However, with the latest development, Instagram says that aim is that "your feed will feel more fresh" by showing more new posts. While Instagram might not be reverting to its old chronological feed, but the change still appears to be a refreshing one.

Additionally, Instagram is also testing a "New Posts" button that will enable users to refresh their feed whenever they wish to, instead of automatically jumping to the top of the feed when the app refreshes. "Tap the button and you'll be taken to new posts at the top of feed - don't tap, and you'll stay where you are. We hope this makes browsing Instagram much more enjoyable," the company explained in a blog post.

Instagram also noted that it will be adding more improvements to its feed over the next few months. Earlier this week, the social media giant had announced a new feature where users can add hashtags and profile links in their bio.
